about elephant park
Lendlease has been working in partnership with Southwark Council to deliver a £2.3 billion regeneration project in Elephant & Castle since 2010. The area has been an important part of London since Roman times, whether as a transport junction, a hub for entertainment and shopping or a place to call home. The project will breathe new life into this special part of Central London, building on Elephant & Castle’s heritage and creating thousands of high quality new homes, jobs, business opportunities and green space for Londoners.
The regeneration is split across three sites: Elephant Park, Trafalgar Place and One The Elephant. We have already completed the first phase of Elephant Park – South Gardens – as well as two earlier phases, Trafalgar Place and One The Elephant. You can find out more about each of these completed schemes below. That leaves a further four phases to be completed across Elephant Park, with a final completion date of 2025.
Trafalgar Place is the first residential development completed in Elephant & Castle by Lendlease. The development completed construction in June 2015 with residents moving in shortly after this. Trafalgar Place now hosts its own community, a new street called New Paragon Way, a variety of sustainability initiatives and high quality homes built to Lendlease standards. The work and design that has contributed to producing the development has been recognised around the industry with Trafalgar Place winning a number of prestigious awards:
• Housing Design Award at Brick Awards
• Best New Place to Live at London Planning Awards
• The Mayor’s Award for Planning Excellence at London Planning Awards
• RIBA National Award
• Stirling Prize shortlist 2016
Trafalgar Place offers 235 high-quality homes in a tranquil urban development, set to lead the way in sustainable living in the heart of the city.
Designed by award-winning architects de Rijke Marsh Morgan, Trafalgar Place is a significant step in the regeneration of Elephant & Castle. Its seven buildings range from 4 to 10 storeys, each designed to sit naturally within, and feel part of, its immediate surroundings. They take advantage of their connectedness – to the streets and landscaping, to the wider community, to the local area’s rich history and, ultimately, to the rest of London.
One The Elephant
One The Elephant is a bold new development and part of an exciting longer term vision for the regeneration of Elephant & Castle, being driven by Lendlease in partnership with Southwark Council.
Situated next to the London Metropolitan Tabernacle in the heart of the Elephant, the development brings a new life and vitality to an area that was previously occupied by a swimming pool that had been derelict for 14 years.
Comprising an elegant 37-storey tower and a four-storey pavilion, One The Elephant’s 284 homes set new standards for sustainable, practical and contemporary London living. Every home benefits from a quality private outside space and is designed to make the most of London’s spectacular skyline.
One The Elephant has enabled the reactivation of a previously inactive and poor quality public space, providing new business space and active frontages, improvements to a local park and the facilitation of a new state-of-the-art community leisure centre.
South Gardens is the first and most family-oriented phase of Lendlease’s Elephant Park Masterplan. Within the 360 new homes South Gardens contains the only townhouses and the largest proportion of three and four-bedroom properties within the project. The buildings range from low-rise townhouses to mid-rise mansion blocks and a 16-storey tower, all set around three beautifully landscaped courtyards and amenities.
The buildings are stylishly designed with detailed and elegant brick facades to create a new, coherent streetscape. All homes are built to a minimum level 4 of the former Code for Sustainable Homes. 22 townhouses within the phase are designed in the style of traditional London townhouses, with bay windows, Juliet balconies and private terraces, leading out to landscaped courtyards with play areas for children, ensuring the homes have access to all the amenities a modern family needs – in zone one.
