Visitors to the cobbled Pullens Yard in Elephant & Castle can experience a lock-in with a difference at the live gaming experience Escape Plan.
Located in Iliffe Yard, above the Electric Elephant Café, the former photographer’s studio has been expertly transformed into a 1940s RAF base complete with authentic props and music from the era.
Called The Battle for Britain, players will have their code-cracking skills put to the test as they are transported back to the start of World War II. The German Luftwaffe has launched an attack and your team are the only survivors on the bombed airbase.
Your task – should you choose to accept it – is to save the country by finding the strategic operations room and mobilising the RAF to defend Britain from further attack. To do this – and win the game – you must navigate the challenging puzzles and decipher codes, all against the clock.
Launched in the summer of 2015 by Brendan Mills and his wife Kerry, Escape Plan was introduced as a pop-up shop on a three-month trial. Three years later, it is going from strength to strength with a second location now open at Rich Mix in Shoreditch.
Escape Plan is aimed at families, groups of friends and is a great option for your office’s next team-building exercise. It’s designed for those aged 11 and above and is suited to teams of two to seven players. You don’t have to be a huge fan of the wartime era to enjoy the one-hour game but an interest in problem-solving will certainly help – fans of The Crystal Maze won’t be disappointed by the puzzles and codes.
Dating back to the 1870s, the historic Pullens Yard offers an atmospheric setting, which also served as the backdrop for some blockbuster films. Scenes for The King’s Speech were filmed at the Elephant & Castle address, and, in 2016, Hollywood royalty was in attendance when Brad Pitt arrived to shoot his World War II spy thriller, Allied.
So, why not put your skills to the test and see if you have what it takes to save your country? No pressure!
