Event Now Passed: Jammin’ in Elephant Park

Jammin’ in Elephant Park

WHEN: Sunday 1 September, noon – 5pm
WHERE: Elephant Park, Elephant Rd, London SE17 1UB
COST: Free – just drop by

Elephant Park will come to life next month, when local Elephant & Castle organisation Uncle-Aug brings the sounds, smells and sights of African and Caribbean cultures to the park.

Afro Jam promises to be a vibrant mix of live music, African drumming, acrobatics and dancing, and there will also be African market stalls, a licensed bar and a DJ on the new green space in the heart of Elephant & Castle.

Uncle-Aug has been running in Elephant & Castle since 2014 as a community interest company (CIC). Named after its founder, Augustine Nyemah, it works to build cohesion between different cultural groups within the community, and to showcase unsupported performance-art groups and new business start-ups.

Afro Jam is the first event Uncle-Aug has held in Elephant Park and it promises to be a fun afternoon for all the family. Speaking about the free event, Nyemah said: “People can expect brilliant performances by artists from the African and Caribbean communities.
Each time we visit Elephant Park, we see the comfort of a new green space, budding and gleaming with hope in this part of London. We want to use this opportunity to explore the new entertainment space that it presents for organisers of events and festivals.

“I hope that Afro Jam provides an opportunity for people to not only enjoy a great afternoon, but also to come and see the rich cultural heritage of the African and Caribbean communities living in Elephant & Castle and beyond.”
