Do something amazing – where to give blood in Elephant & Castle
Giving blood is the easiest way to save a life – and you can donate just 10 minutes from Elephant Park.
You know what they say… not all heroes wear capes. By donating blood, you could aid someone in an emergency or give a new lease of life to a patient with a long-term illness.
Giving blood couldn’t be easier. All you have to do is check your eligibility, register online and then choose an appointment at a time and venue that suits you.
Elephant Park’s nearest blood donation venues are the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, in Manor Place, Walworth, and events venue Ugly Duck in Tanner Street, Bermondsey. Both are easy to get to by bus, by tube or on foot.
Giving blood is nothing to worry about. The donating process is simple, painless and the whole thing takes between five and 10 minutes.
Almost anyone can give blood. If you’re fit and healthy, aged between 17 and 66 and weigh more than 50kg, then the chances are you’ll be eligible to donate.
At the moment, there’s a particular need for young people and those from the black, Asian and minority ethnic communities to give blood.
Last year, Southwark community leaders joined the NHS to call for more residents to give blood, and BAME residents were specifically encouraged.
According to the NHS’s Give Blood website, only one per cent of blood donors are black, and 40,000 more are needed to meet demand. Receiving blood from someone with the same ethnic background increases the chances of a match – important for some patients, especially those who require ongoing transfusions.
Walworth’s Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is found between Kennington and Walworth Road, a seven-minute walk from Kennington tube station. Ugly Duck is a 10-minute walk from London Bridge and Bermondsey tube stations. More information on giving blood can be found here.
