Perhaps you’re searching for ideas for half term, for the next set of school holidays, or just looking for some weekend inspiration. Whatever the reason, here are some of our favourite things to do for kids near Elephant and Castle.

Keep fit at the Castle Centre
2 St Gabriel Walk, SE1 6FG

The Castle Centre is one of Southwark Council’s fitness facilities, but one which recently underwent a £20m redevelopment. This brought an upgraded sports hall, new fitness studios, a cycling studio, café, swimming pools, a spa and a creche.

It now offers a busy schedule of events and classes for the local community, with every Southwark resident now entitled to a free gym and swim session each week. Why not grab the kids and head for a day of keeping fit, maybe followed with a drink and snack at the brand new café? Just be aware you have to book in advance to avoid disappointment!

Visit Elephant Springs
21 Ash Avenue, Elephant Park, SE17 1FR

In 2021 we were delighted to open what we call our urban oasis at the heart of Elephant Park – Elephant Springs. We created a natural landscape, a place where rock formations leap from the ground and water fountains spring up as if London had formed its very own natural geyser.

In the winter months, sandpits, slides and natural rocky climbing areas keep kids of all ages entertained, while hammocks provide a restful place for accompanying adults to grab a breath of fresh air and slice of nature. And in the spring and summer, the area comes to life with natural water jets.

Why not pack a lunch or pick up a takeaway at one of the nearby restaurants and spend an afternoon in the great outdoors? Read our article to view the Elephant Springs area guide and find out all you need to know before your visit.

Grab lunch at Mercato Metropolitano
42 Newington Causeway, SE1 6DR

Not only something to do for kids near Elephant and Castle, but an experience that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. Mercato Metropolitano now has multiple locations across London, one of which is at the heart of Southwark. This international food market brings the flavours of the world into one room.

Walking through the market is a feast for the senses and your little ones will be spoiled for choice while they decide what to try first. Nearly every continent is represented, so we say – have three courses, and don’t visit the same stand twice! Once you’ve chosen your food, take a seat and enjoy. And do note that Mercato Metropolitano is dog friendly, so no need to leave your furry friends at home.

We’ve created a run down of all the food options available, so have a look to set your tastebuds a-tingling!

Explore the London Aquarium
Riverside Building, County Hall, Westminster Bridge Rd, London SE1 7PB

Open 7 days a week, the SEA LIFE London Aquarium is a great day out for the kids, rain or shine.

You can take a stroll under the glass Ocean Tunnel, or visit the Gentoo penguins and watch them up close at Penguin Point. And, if you're feeling brave enough, get up close and personal with the creepy crawlies and snapping piranhas in the Rainforest Adventure area!

Discover the Imperial War Museum
Lambeth Road, London, SE1 6HZ

If you're looking for something educational, why not take a trip to the Imperial War Museum?

Filled with interactive exhibits and educational displays, the museum was started in 1917 -in the midst of World War I. Here, you and the kids can explore over one million items relating to the war, from inspiring first hand accounts from people who lived through the conflict, to vehicles and equipment used.

Admission to the museum is free, although we'd recommend booking ahead at busier times.
