We’re delighted to announce that HEJ Coffee – who’s Southwark outpost and coffee roastery is based right here at Elephant Park – are finalists in the Southwark Business Awards.

Nominated in the category “Covid 19 Business Resilience”, this award is to recognise businesses who have reacted quickly and innovatively to the challenges presented by the Covid pandemic.

After the initial lockdown, HEJ had lost a large proportion of turnover but rather than accept defeat, they turned their focus to how they could help the local community - and help they did!

Directors and staff helped the Mayor of London’s project to deliver school lunches to children who otherwise may have gone without. They created a brand called Café Queero and donated proceeds to the Outside Project, an LGBTQ hostel who house the homeless.  This involved donating coffee, equipment and providing training to help them open their own coffee shop.

The team also launched liquidkindness.org – an ecommerce site selling coffee where they donate all proceeds to charities that help the homeless.

As if that wasn’t enough, HEJ also decided to have a look at what they could do to improve their own sustainability. They launched an eco-friendly delivery business, supplying local wholesale customers across Southwark, using reusable containers. They delivered all coffee on electric cargo bikes and a refurbished, electric, 1963 milk float Ernie. Customers can also track how many plastic coffee bags and emissions they have saved by using the HEJ service, vs competing wholesalers.
